Legality of Selling Pet Sugar Glider Offspring

sugar gliders as pets

I’ve been a bit worried about the frequency with which the Sugar Gliders (aka “the babies” or “the monkeys”) have been breeding. Our young males are now old enough to find another home, but I couldn’t decipher the laws on exotics to my satisfaction.

Yesterday, I broke down and called the USDA’s offices on exotics [(919) 855-7100 for anyone else who needs it] to determine what I needed to do to remain legal. And, I’m glad I did.

I talked with Tony, who explained that unless I was planning on selling the gliders as a business, I would be ok, since I only have two “breeding” females and they won’t license anyone unless they have more than three breeding females. So, I can sell the offspring that occur naturally without worrying about licensing. That’s quite a relief.

So, I guess it’s time to start looking for homes for the joey boys (the girls aren’t nearly old enough yet!)
